|
The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of the neighborhood environment on depression and investigates the mediating influence of the social activity among the elderly in Jeju. The study analyzed the 445 cases of elderly living in Jeju from the 2017 national elderly life survey in Korea. The independent variable of neighborhood environment divides into four factors: housing environment satisfaction, external environment accessibility, social contact frequency, and social relationship satisfaction. The main results are as follows: The housing environment satisfaction and social relationship satisfaction have a significant effect on decreasing the depression of the elderly. All of the neighborhood environment factors affect improving the elderlys’ social activities participation. The elderly social activity fully mediates the effect of housing environment satisfaction on depression. Also, it fully mediates the impact of social relationship satisfaction on depression. Based on the results, the study suggests enhancing the physical and social neighborhood environment and extending social activity participation to alleviate depression for the elderly living in Jeju.
